APPEARANCE AND COMFORT:
To protect you from the sun and rain, Tilleys fit lower than other hats. This also tends to give
one a rather dashing appearance!
For your comfort, they're held on by gravity, not painful pressure on your forehead. On a hot
muggy day, you'll especially appreciate this!
GUARANTEED FOR LIFE:
Tilleys are replaced free if they ever wear out, shrink or fall apart. They're so carefully
handcrafted by us in Canada, and made of such strong materials, that many outlive their owners. Final
words in the Owner's Manual? "Pass it on!"
INSURED AGAINST LOSS:
We understand the anguish of losing this reliable companion, or of having your dog terminally gnaw
it. Should that happen, we'll replace your late, lamented Tilley at half the catalogue price.
With your Hat, you'll be provided with "The Straight-Shooter's Statement of Loss of a
Tilley Hat" insurance policy. The insurance is for two years, all perils, 50% deductible, and is
not issued by Lloyds.
FLOATS:
A layer of closed-cell foam in the crown, and sometimes in the brim, provides the Tilley's
positive buoyancy. This is a boon to boaters and fishermen/women/people. Good grief!
People have told us that this foam layer has helped save their lives. Double your money back if
it doesn't save yours. Apply personally....
TIES ON:
The Tilley comes with a tuckaway, adjustable, fore 'n' aft Wind Cord. When it's calm, the Wind
Cord stays hidden in the crown. When there's a breeze, place the part with the sliding knots behind
your head. When it's windy or you're sailing, use the chin part too.
See COMFORT above, and the Owner's Manual, which accompanies each Hat, for amplification.
REPELS RAIN:
Not perfectly but usually quite adequately. Happily, the brims of the cotton-duck Tilleys actually
become stiffer when they get wet, not floppier, helping to protect your neck, face and glasses.
The Lighterweight Nylamtium® Tilleys are excellent at repelling rain.
WON'T SHRINK:
They, in 1980: "Alex, you can't make a cotton hat that won't shrink!"
Me: "But what if we boiled the material first? Mercilessly preshrunk it?"
They: "Well, I guess that would work."
It did and does.
HYDROFIL® ANTI-SWEAT BAND:
Soft and comfortable, it picks up sweat from your forehead and wicks it away to your temple area
where it evaporates.
CERTIFIED SUN PROTECTION:
The fabric and style of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB
radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given.
You still need SPF 15 sunscreen and sunglasses with UV filters! Children especially need the UV
filters in their sunglasses as non-filtering glasses will increase the size of their pupils, allowing
even more of the damaging UV rays to enter. This often causes cataracts and retinal problems later in
life and has happened in my (Alex Tilley's) own family.
UMPTEEN SIZES:
Most hat makers make 4 or 5 sizes; we make 13, and even individual Hats beyond that size range when
necessary.
As a matter of principle, no one shall be deprived of the pleasure and privileges of Tilley Hat
ownership simply because of an uncommon head size.
The Tilley Hat fits more comfortably than other hats. It’s designed to be worn low on your
head and slightly loose. It should be held on by gravity, not by painful pressure on your forehead! For
the proper fit, you should be able to easily insert two fingers, flat, between the middle of your
forehead and the front of the Hat. The Hat should be loose enough that you can rotate it to the left
and right, and lift it up and down, without friction on your forehead. When it’s windy, use the
cord!
Like footwear, your Tilley Hat must be sized properly. To find your hat size, use a tape measure
and draw it right around your head, just above the eyebrows.
4-PAGE OWNER'S MANUAL:
You'll find it a good read. It's also available in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian,
Japanese and Spanish. Please specify if it should be other than in English.
BRAG TAGS:
There are 8 of these in the Secret Pocket. You'll have fun with them; they can even get you into
trouble, if you wish.
SECRET POCKET:
Inside the crown is a good-sized pocket sealed with Velcro. In it, carry your Brag Tags, I.D.,
toilet paper(!), license, hotel key, $10 bill (in your case a 20), plus a quarter for an emergency
phone call.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEAD:
As mentioned above, a Tilley Hat fits lower and more comfortably than other hats. The lower it
sits, the larger at that point is one's head circumference. To find your Tilley size, simply measure
around your head, just above the eyebrows. Tell us this measurement in inches or centimetres. We'll
take it from there.
If you already know your regular hat size, please ask for one size larger when you order your
Tilley. For instance, if you're sure you're a 7 1/4, order a 7 3/8.
WASHING INSTRUCTIONS:
Wash it frequently or non-removable sweat stains will mar it and possibly rot it. Machine or hand
wash in warm or cool water. Do not use bleach as it remains inside the Hat, slowly rotting it. Smooth
and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry.
MADE OF TITANIUM AND KRYPTONITE
Hardly! The lighterweight Tilley (LT) Hats are handcrafted of a strong, laminated, waterproof
nylon, Tilley Nylamtium® . Other Hats, are created from 10-ounce (per square yard) cotton duck, a
tough, soft, closely woven, mercilessly preshrunk, water-and mildew-repellent, canvas-like material.
Our newest hats are engineered from 11-oz. hemp, nature’s performance fabric®. Hemp is the
world’s strongest natural fibre.
We hand-sew each Hat using very strong thread; all seams are lock-stitched so they won't
unravel. The brass is from Britain and is the best there is. All Hats are made with such care and
dedication that one is as good as another. Your Tilley will be equal to that presented to a President
or princess. ("Hi, Duke! How long have you had your Tilley?" could be an effective opener.)
Shortly after I wrote that, HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was pictured on page one
of Britain's Daily Telegraph, and The Times, at a horse show, whilst riding a small motorcycle,
wearing a T5. I found this especially delightful because HRH is known to disdain wearing hats except
naval officers' caps! He had taken the wind cord and made a bow of it, placing the bow above the brim,
something I hadn't seen before.
But What May Be Most Wonderful of All?
Those who wear Tilleys usually have innate good taste, creative minds and uncommon intelligence.
Everybody knows that! And the Hats serve to identify such people to each other - immediately.
Because of these exceptional yet shared traits, virtually always, especially in foreign
countries, Tilley wearers greet each other. Friendships have been formed because of the Hat, and that
can be the nicest thing of all.
